Big 6

Courage

Courage is one of the Big Six core happiness virtues. It's the will to achieve things even if they're difficult and take hard work. Take action to grow the following personal strengths to increase your courage and add to your happiness.

Bravery

Be brave, get out of your comfort zone and find new ways to enjoy life. You could try a new sport, or take a different route to work. The point is to do something different that maybe you wouldn't have thought of doing.

Hope

There is plenty to look forward to, whether big or small things, to give hope for the future. Think of something that will happen to you in the next few days that you are looking forward to. Maybe you've got a new book to read, or a TV programme to watch, or perhaps a holiday coming up.

Don't forget to look back to see the things that have turned out well in the past. If you think back you can remember a time when something happened that surprised you and gave you pleasure. Perhaps someone gave you a present, or a compliment? Always remember it could happen again: or something even better.

Integrity

Be honest, genuine and at one with yourself. None of us is perfect. We all have failings, and by acknowledging that we can forgive ourselves and maybe do something to improve. For example, if a work colleague is better at managing her email than you are, acknowledge it and ask her to help you improve.

Perseverance

Keep on trying and go that extra mile. It needs courage. It's much easier to give up when you drop a stitch in your knitting, or get bored with your book. It takes guts to keep on when you want to stop, but it's nearly always worth it for the rewards.
